Overview
“There’s nothing like homemade,” Craig Claiborne, the former New York Times food editor, wrote about ice cream in 1978. “It has become as much a part of the culture as hamburgers, clam chowder, cheesecake and corn on the cob. Or pie à la mode. And nothing is more American than that.” This photo of a scrumptious, double scoop ice cream cone was published in The Times alongside his article on July 19, 1978.

“Food lore is nothing if not romantic,” Mr. Claiborne wrote as he chronicled the history of ice cream in American culture, dating back to the founders. George Washington was the first in the nation to buy a “cream machine for making ice” (for one pound, 13 shillings and four pence) and Thomas Jefferson, a noted gourmand, carefully recorded a recipe he had obtained from the Court of Louis XVI. Today, Mr. Claiborne wrote, “there is no denying the American craving for it.”
To maintain the historical integrity of the image, the photograph is reprinted in its original hard-copy condition, showing cropping indicators, pencil marks and airbrushing by retouchers to highlight specific areas. The made-to-order image is printed on giclée archival photo paper and is available framed or unframed. Framed photography comes ready to hang with a removable wire attached to the back. The print comes from The New York Times’s extensive archives, known as the “morgue,” which houses more than five million photographic prints that date back to the turn of the last century. It is available exclusively from The Times Store.
