Overview

The eagle is a symbol of America, but it also holds a special place in Times history. For decades, the eagle appeared on our editorial page, delivery trucks and printing plant. Now, the eagle returns in grand fashion to grace this vintage-style sweatshirt, produced by Brooklyn-based Knickerbocker. The 100% cotton fleece sweatshirt is part of our Early Edition collection of apparel inspired by information, typography and artifacts unearthed from our archives.

The eagle — sending a message of power, authority and freedom — appeared in an emblem on our editorial page from 1958 to 1972. The emblem was inspired by an 18th century eagle statue that publisher Arthur Hays Sulzberger bought in an antiques store.

Sulzberger ran The Times from 1935, following the death of his father-in-law, Adolph S. Ochs, until 1961. He led an era of prosperity at the newspaper — the staff more than doubled, reaching 5,200, and the daily circulation rose from 465,000 to 713,000 and Sunday circulation from 745,000 to 1.4 million.

The eagle logo faded away in the mid-1970s as the paper moved to a more modern look. Gone for more than 40 years, the emblem was recently discovered by Times designers, who felt it was time to bring back the enduring symbol of independence and freedom of the press.

The eagle logo has been reproduced in exacting detail with water-based black ink on this retro, off-white sweatshirt. The hefty 14-ounce sweatshirt has mounted-collar construction and V-inset for a traditional look with exceptional quality.

It was created in collaboration with Knickerbocker, a clothing and fashion brand steeped in New York history like The Times. Knickerbocker was founded in 2013 on the Brooklyn and Queens border, where it took over a 60-year-old manufacturing company formerly known as Watman Headwear Corporation. A champion of handcrafted, quality clothing, Knickerbocker produces clothing with a distinct New York look under its own label, while also working with top brands. It collaborated with The Times to create many items in our Early Edition.
